I came across a blog about an experiment designing a 300$ home for the poorest. I think the issue is to "design with" those who will live in such a house and not "design for them". After I read the article, I could not answer the question

In developing countries, 80% of all premature and low-birth-weight infants are born far away form hospitals and traditional incubators. In the US, an infant incubator costs $20,000. But what if we could rethink the problem and provide the world's poor with incubators for under $30 each? Stanford's "Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability" students took up the challenge.

Enterprising Schools, an initiative of Gray Matters Capital Foundation, is sponsoring this challenge, focused on increasing the access of low-cost and appropriate learning tools for affordable private schools in India and worldwide. The submissions will contribute to the development of a catalogue of existing tools and would provide inspirational concepts to entrepreneurs who will be encouraged to take them forward and build businesses to provide affordable private schools with much-needed tools and materials. The purpose of this engagement is to provide access to quality learning tools and materials to affordable private schools first in India, and secondarily, worldwide.

We can create collaboration between local food vendors (local farmers/urban food entrepreneurs) and inner-city schools. Vendors will sell their wares outside schools when parents are picking up their kids, making it convenient for over-worked parents to buy fresh produce and raising awareness at a family level. Vendors will simultaneously host cheap cooking workshops for middle and high school students in school kitchens, in order to bring fresh food, cooking knowledge, and a deeper understanding of food systems into homes.

I'm thinking of Aravind’s „eye camps“ in India, which are a great example how to bring health care service to rural India. The same concept can be applied to improve maternal health in remote areas. Aravind’s eye clinic provides basic tools for diagnosis as well as advanced satellite-linked telemedicine trucks that travel regularly to remote locations, perform eye exams, teach eye care and identify people who may require surgery. Using the telemedicine trucks, the doctors back in Aravind’s hospitals participate in decisions and make diagnosis when needed. Similarly “Mom-To-Be Camps” can be organized periodically, where women could be registered, examined, re-examined, taught about pregnancy and birth. If required they could be sent for advanced diagnostic services to the nearest hospitals.
