Following up on Shana's inspiration about local government engagement in San Francisco, there is an opportunity at all levels of government (from individual towns to international organizations like the United Nations) to increase public participation in a collaborative innovation process. This increases the chance of creating solutions that truly meet the needs of and are actively supported by citizens, while also building public trust through a transparent process. One large-scale example in the United States is the current National Open Government Initiative.

The pool of inspirations on OpenIDEO is evidence of the wealth of innovations taking place all around the world. These local innovative examples have the potential to change the world on a large scale, but I fear there is an expiration date to some of them. They could be terminated due to a number of reasons, such as the lost of funding, the lost of resources, the lost of market momentum, etc. If we fail to execute them in a timely manner, will they get shelved, collect dust, and wither away?
