Starting a Chapter: Frequently Asked Questions

We bet you have them—and we’ve got you covered.

What are OpenIDEO Chapters?

OpenIDEO Chapters regularly convene community builders, innovators, experts and funders in cities worldwide to take local action on global OpenIDEO initiatives. This action takes many different forms including events, workshops, panel discussions, design research, social meetups, networking, and dinners. Chapters are volunteer-run and community-based initiatives, organized by people who are passionate about solving social issues in their cities through collaborative design.

How do I start an OpenIDEO Chapter?

We have built an intentional, supportive process for establishing a Chapter so that those interested in starting them can feel out if the commitment and opportunity is right for them. It involves two steps: forming a team and launching an OpenIDEO Outpost. To learn more visit our pre-application resources.

How long is the application process to open a new Chapter?

Usually around four weeks. This can vary depending on the speed of your team to deliver the requested materials throughout the recruitment process, and the capacity of the OpenIDEO team.

Are Chapters financially aided by OpenIDEO?

No. However, depending on the initiative, we do when possible provide financial grants to support Chapters with their events. Many of our Chapters rely on local partners to provide space, materials and other event needs.

Can an OpenIDEO Chapter partner up with a local organization?

Yes! We encourage you to map the different local stakeholders in your city that can support the Chapter in any way. We will provide guidance and support to build such partnerships.

Can an OpenIDEO Chapter focus on their own topics locally, independent from global initiatives?

We have learned that impact is best achieved when OpenIDEO Chapters across the globe collectively focus on driving impact on the same topics. That said, we believe flexibility is important and empower Chapters to contextualize our efforts to be relevant to their local communities.
